“A Memorable December” is a project carried out by the Club Service Avenue of the Rotaract Club of University of Sri Jayewardenepura with the sole purpose of enhancing the bond between the club members and the other Rotaract Clubs. The project was initiated in the year 2020 when the whole world was affected by an unseen threat: the COVID-19 pandemic. Spreading Christmas cheer to everyone while ‘staying at home’ was the main objective of this initiative, and today it has grown on a grand scale. The project received the Gold Award for the Most Outstanding Club Service Initiative (Virtual) at the 31st Rotaract District Assembly.
In 2020, “A Memorable December” was held in a virtual setting under three phases: a handcraft, photographic competition, and a virtual open mic session. Further, historical but thought-provoking facts about Christmas were cited for five consecutive days to evoke the spirit of Christmas.
The following year, which is the year 2021, the project was carried out under the title “A Memorable December 2.0”. The Club Service Avenue, in collaboration with the Finance Committee, organized the project under two phases in a completely new manner. “Secret Santa,” a Christmas Card exchange, was the first phase of the project; where it provided an ideal opportunity to find new friends and surprise each other by gifting a creative and thoughtful Christmas card to disperse the love and warmth of the Yuletide season. The second phase of the project, the Christmas Party, featuring the Grand Christmas Raffle Draw, came along to immerse everyone in the joy of the Christmas season after living a monotonous life for two years due to the pandemic. The beats of JAMMY, the melodious songs sung by the invited performers, and the fun game session were able to hype up the audience and allow them to enjoy to their heart’s content. Also, the event provided a great opportunity to connect with Former Presidents and Alumni of the Club again.
Despite the various challenges, “ A Memorable December” did not fail to come among our Rotaractors this year as well. Accordingly, the Club Service Avenue and the Finance Committee organized “A Memorable December 3.0”. The project was held under two phases. The first phase of the project, “Secret Santa,” Christmas card exchange, is ongoing these days. The second phase of the project, which is the Christmas party and the Grand Raffle Draw, was held successfully on the 23rd of December 2022 from 6.00 pm onwards, at Lounge 42, DHPL Building, Colombo 02, amidst fun games and melodious tunes of the extremely talented artists of “The Voice Sri Lanka,” and the fine beats of the Flair band of University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
Indeed, “A Memorable December” has never failed to amuse the family of the Rotaract Club of University of Sri Jayewardenepura and bring a colorful yuletide to all. Above all, it has allowed our members from different backgrounds to feel the true spirit of Christmas, which is to share love, joy, and happiness.
