Winter is Coming

Although the world is full of people in need all year round, no time is that more apparent than during the holiday season. For every smiling family celebrating Christmas in the cozy warmth of home, there are others who have no gifts, no home, and sometimes, even no family at all. To play our part in putting a smile on someone’s face, somewhere in this little world, we, from the Rotaract Club of Colombo Heritage and Rotaract Club of JP Nagar, India, hosted ‘Winter is Coming,’ under the Community Service avenue, on 17 December 2022. This year, the initiative was able to donate clothes, toys, and stationery to the little children of ‘Disala’ Children’s home, Kandana.

Weeks prior to the day of donation, collections for clean clothes, blankets, and books were published on social medial platforms. Adding to these contributions, 13 club members and 22 little children added color to the good-natured event that Saturday.

Boxes of clothes, CR books, stationery items, and snacks filled all our hands on our way there. The members were hospitably accommodated by the officials in the Children’s home and the friendly little souls walking about absolutely made all our days so much more happier. After having little chats with both the adults and the little children on the premises, the special day was made even more special because of a sudden birthday party! A little kid, and one of our members who happened to share their birthdays on this day, cut the birthday cake surrounded by all our smiling faces under the shade of a mango tree in the garden.

After sharing the cake around, the day was filled with competitive games such as musical chairs and a singing session, from which we also learned that we had visited a bunch of little musicians that day. After snapping some pictures and more talking, it was finally time to say goodbye. With the promise to come to visit them again someday soon, we left there contently.

Mother Theresa said once that it’s not about how much we give but about how much love we put into what we give. We might not have made an enormous difference to all the sad things happening in this world. But their genuine smiles and the happiness we were able to mirror back to them had already shown us that the project did what it was intended to do.

To end this note, we at Colombo Heritage Rotaract Club are pleased to say that we gave all we had in making Christmas special for them on that amazing Saturday afternoon.
